Layla’s Legacy
Layla Elizabeth So was a bright and compassionate young woman who touched many lives during her fifteen years. Born on April 8, 2009, in Pearl River, NY to her loving parents, Rizlene (Lisa) and Solomon So, Layla displayed an artistic spark and a keen intellect from an early age. Those closest to her recall her wisdom beyond her years, her gentle kindness, and her creative spirit. She was happiest when surrounded by her family, playing with her beloved pets Nico and Cinder, or spending time with friends—whether it was exploring worlds in Roblox, baking sweet treats on camping trips, or building impressive Lego creations.
An excellent student and natural leader, Layla’s achievements at Pearl River High School reflected her boundless curiosity. She was a High Honor Roll student, a valuable member of the Varsity Bowling Team (earning the Most Improved Player Award), and an active participant in the Marine Science Club, where her passion for biology thrived. Outside of school, she dedicated herself to karate—proudly earning her brown belt and working diligently toward her black belt. Layla also made time to volunteer at the local library, further demonstrating her generous spirit.
Among Layla’s many pursuits, scouting held a special place in her heart. She was a founding member of Troop 97G in New City and worked relentlessly to attain her Eagle Scout rank, already achieving the rank of Life Scout. Layla showcased strong leadership, serving as Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Troop Guide, Instructor, and even Den Chief for Cub Scout Pack 46. Her dedication and leadership qualities led to her recommendation for the BSA National Youth Leadership Training and a nomination to the Order of the Arrow, reflecting the respect she earned within the scouting community.
Throughout her two-year battle with cancer, Layla showed remarkable courage and resilience. She passed away on August 7, 2024, leaving behind countless memories of her kindness, humor, and unwavering determination. Her family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to have known her will always remember Layla for her vibrant spirit, her devotion to helping others, and her passion for life’s adventures.

Our Donation Story
Layla loved biology and science in general. She was 13 when she was diagnosed with DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) or DMG (Diffuse Midline Glioma). After she recovered from her surgeries a couple of months later, she read everything she could find about the disease. She knew that there was no cure possible and understood that she was going to die from it. Layla asked us and her doctors at MSK Hospital to donate her brain to help further research. She passed away on August 7 at the age of 15.
