Stephani Campion

My name is Stephani Campion and I have the privilege of serving as the Tissue Navigator at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in sunny Orlando, Florida.

I have always been fascinated by the sciences–even had a toy microscope when I was a child. My interest in all things ‘brain’ was sparked at a young age (10), when my mother had to undergo a series of brain surgeries after a malformation within ruptured. Fast forward to college, I began volunteering in an Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s lab. I studied Molecular Biology in my undergrad, received my master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, then spent 5 years working in a Neurobiology lab researching Neurofibromatosis, axons, neurons, and Schwann cells before transitioning to Arnold Palmer Hospital.

At Arnold Palmer Hospital, we have started our very own Neuro-Oncology Translational Research lab dedicated to brain tumor tissue collection, processing, and storage. We collaborate with other institutions and have shared cell lines grown in our lab from tissue donations collected during surgery and from autopsies.

Discoveries and challenges to the status quo are made possible because of efforts like Gift from a Child (GFAC) and, most importantly, because of forward thinking, generous families who align with us all in our fight to find a cure. Collaboration and energy towards advocacy are the perfect combination of what GFAC brings to our communities. I am honored to work with families and our care teams to share and advocate for the importance of tissue donation to help save others.

A Simple Two-Step Process

For the family, once a decision has been made to donate, only two things are required. The first is written consent for the child to become a tissue donor, and the second is a single phone call to a tissue navigator at the time of a child’s death to initiate the process.
